Apicoectomy

An apicoectomy, also known as ‘root end surgery’ is a minor, preventative surgery procedure removing the apex of one’s tooth – the very tip of the tooth’s root. However, while the procedure is minor, its success can be very important in preventing health complications involving your teeth. Apicoectomies are commonly performed following root canals, usually if the root canal causes or aggravates an infection in the tooth. At Stafford Oral Surgery, we have an endodontist on our dental team to perform apicoectomies to remove the apex of the tooth in question. The procedure will calm the infection and prevent tooth pain while also preventing the tooth from needing to be extracted.

What Happens in an Apicoectomy?

The procedure is quite simple: A local anesthetic is applied, then a small incision is made along your gum around the infected tooth to expose infected or inflamed tissue. You endodontist will remove the apex of the tooth (the end of its root), and seal the end of the root canal with filling as necessary. The incision is then stitched closed, and the bone will heal around the tooth over the next few months.

Recovery is usually swift – minor discomfort and swelling are the only side effects, and they will not be present long as your tooth and gum heals. Be sure to follow the post-operative advice given by your endodontist regarding brushing and eating procedures to ensure a swifter, easier recovery!
